Claude Monet, French Impressionist (b1840 in Paris, d1926 in Giverny), was the initiator, leader and constant advocator of the Impressionist technique. He founded the Impressionist movement, which proved ground-breaking around the turn of the century, with his picture "Impression, soleil levant", which was first exhibited in 1874 to a great deal of criticism.
